How to Secure Your Android Wi-Fi Hotspot

Protect your mobile data and devices by configuring WPA3 encryption and strong passwords on your Android Wi-Fi hotspot.

  1. Open the Hotspot settings menu. Open the Settings app on your Android device. Navigate to Network & internet, select Hotspot & tethering, and tap Wi-Fi hotspot to view the configuration menu.
  2. Set the security protocol to WPA3. Tap Security within the hotspot settings. Select WPA3-Personal to enable the most modern and secure encryption standard available. If your devices do not support WPA3, choose WPA2/WPA3-Personal.
  3. Create a complex hotspot password. Tap Hotspot password and replace the default string with a unique combination of at least 12 characters. Use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols to ensure the network cannot be guessed by automated scripts.
  4. Disable Wi-Fi band broadcasting. Select AP Band and choose 5 GHz or 6 GHz if supported by your devices. Using a 5 GHz or 6 GHz band provides a shorter range than 2.4 GHz, which physically limits the area in which unauthorized users can detect your signal.
  5. Enable Auto-Turn-Off. Locate the Turn off hotspot automatically toggle within the advanced settings. Ensure this is enabled to guarantee the hotspot shuts down when no devices are actively connected.
