How to Restore Google Wallet on a New Android Phone

Follow these steps to restore your payment cards and passes to Google Wallet after switching to a new Android device.

  1. Sign in to your Google Account. Ensure your new device is signed into the exact same Google Account used on your previous phone. Google Wallet data is tethered to your Google Account identity, not the device hardware.
  2. Download Google Wallet. Open the Google Play Store on your new device. Search for Google Wallet and tap Install. If the app is pre-installed, ensure it is updated to the latest version by checking for pending updates in the Play Store.
  3. Configure screen lock. Google Wallet requires a secure lock method to function. Navigate to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock and set up a PIN, pattern, or biometric authentication before attempting to add cards.
  4. Verify payment methods. Open the Google Wallet app. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner and confirm the correct Google Account is selected. Your saved payment methods will populate automatically as they are synced from your account profile.
  5. Complete identity verification. For security purposes, you may need to re-verify certain credit or debit cards. Tap on each card shown in the wallet and follow the on-screen prompts, which may include entering your bank's verification code sent via SMS or email.
  6. Set default payment. Within the Google Wallet app, select your preferred card for tap-to-pay. Tap Details, then select Set as default for contactless payments. Your device is now ready for use.
