How to Fix RCS Messaging Activation Issues on Android

Troubleshoot RCS messaging stuck on connecting or setting up on your new Android device with these precise steps to restore Google Messages functionality.

  1. Update Google Messages and Carrier Services. Open the Google Play Store. Tap your profile icon, select Manage apps & device, and ensure Google Messages and Carrier Services are updated to the latest versions.
  2. Clear cache for Messages and Carrier Services. Navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Select Messages, tap Storage & cache, and choose Clear cache. Repeat this exact process for the Carrier Services app.
  3. Disable and re-enable RCS chats. Open Google Messages. Tap your profile icon, select Messages settings, and tap RCS chats. Toggle the Status switch to Off, wait ten seconds, then toggle it back to On.
  4. Reset network settings. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Select Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth and confirm. Your device will disconnect from networks and require a restart.
  5. Verify default SMS app settings. Navigate to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Ensure SMS app is set to Messages. If a third-party app is selected, RCS functionality will be suppressed by the system.
  6. Perform a forced restart. Hold the Power button and Volume Up button simultaneously until the device screen turns black. Allow the device to reboot completely to refresh all background communication services.
