How to Back Up Your Android Device Before Switching Phones

Secure your data before upgrading. Follow this step-by-step guide to back up your Android photos, contacts, and app data to Google Drive.

  1. Check Google One backup settings. Open the Settings app on your device. Navigate to Google > Backup and ensure the 'Backup by Google One' toggle is set to On. Confirm that all categories, including Photos & videos, App data, and SMS, are selected for synchronization.
  2. Perform a manual cloud backup. Within the Backup menu, tap the 'Back up now' button at the bottom of the screen. Wait for the progress indicator to complete. This ensures the most recent state of your device settings and app list is uploaded to your Google account.
  3. Force a Google Photos sync. Open the Google Photos app. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner and verify that 'Backup is on.' If you see a number of items remaining, tap 'Back up now' to ensure your entire media library is uploaded to the cloud.
  4. Verify Google Contacts synchronization. Open the Contacts app. Tap your profile icon, select 'Contacts settings,' then 'Google Contacts sync.' Ensure 'Also sync device contacts' is enabled and the 'Automatically back up & sync device contacts' toggle is active.
  5. Export critical app-specific data. Many messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, require a manual chat backup. Open the application, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup, and tap 'Back up' to push your local conversation history to your linked Google Drive account.
