How to Fix an Android Update Stuck on Downloading

Learn how to resolve an Android system update stuck on downloading or installing with these precise troubleshooting steps.

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode to refresh network connections. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Settings panel. Tap the Airplane Mode icon to enable it, wait ten seconds, and tap it again to disable it. This forces the device to re-establish a handshake with the update servers.
  2. Clear cache for Google Play Services and System UI. Navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Locate Google Play Services, tap Storage & cache, and select Clear cache. Repeat this process for the System UI app to remove corrupted temporary files interfering with the update process.
  3. Free up local storage space. System updates require significant headroom to unpack installation files. Navigate to Settings > Storage and ensure you have at least 5GB of free space. Delete large unused video files or clear cached media from high-usage apps to provide sufficient room.
  4. Reset network settings. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Select Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. Tap Reset settings to confirm. This clears any misconfigured VPN or proxy settings that may be blocking the update server traffic.
  5. Re-trigger the update check. Navigate to Settings > System > Software update. Tap Check for update. If the download resumes, keep the device on a charger and connected to Wi-Fi until the installation bar completes.
