How to Fix an Unresponsive Android Touch Screen

Restore functionality to your unresponsive Android device with these systematic troubleshooting steps. Resolve software glitches and hardware conflicts.

  1. Clean the screen and remove physical obstructions. Debris, moisture, or a damaged screen protector can cause phantom touches or total unresponsiveness. Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the display surface thoroughly. If you use a tempered glass or plastic screen protector, peel it off carefully to rule out interference with the digitizer.
  2. Perform a forced restart. A system process hang often prevents the OS from registering touch input. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button simultaneously for 15 to 30 seconds. The device will force a reboot regardless of the current software state.
  3. Boot the device into Safe Mode. Third-party applications can cause system-wide input latency or freezes. With the device powered on, press and hold the Power button, then tap and hold the Power Off icon on the screen until the Reboot to Safe Mode prompt appears. Tap OK to restart in a state where only factory-installed applications run.
  4. Connect an external input device. If the screen remains unresponsive, use a USB-OTG adapter to connect a standard computer mouse to your device. The Android OS will automatically detect the peripheral and display a cursor. Use the mouse to navigate to Settings, remove suspect applications, or perform a system update.
  5. Factory reset the device. If hardware diagnostics fail to resolve the issue, restore the device to factory defaults to eliminate deep-seated software corruption. Navigate to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). This will wipe all user data, so ensure you have a cloud backup performed previously.
