How to Fix Android Phone Running Slow

Fix your slow Android phone with these proven steps. Clear cache, remove bloatware, update apps, and optimize storage to restore performance.

  1. Clear system cache and app data. Open Settings > Storage > Cached data and tap to clear system cache. Then go to Settings > Apps, select problematic apps, and tap Storage > Clear Cache for each one. For severely slow apps, tap Clear Data but note this removes app settings and login information.
  2. Remove unused apps and bloatware. Navigate to Settings > Apps and scroll through the complete list. Uninstall apps you haven't used in 30 days by tapping each app and selecting Uninstall. For pre-installed apps that can't be uninstalled, tap Disable to prevent them from running in the background.
  3. Update Android system and apps. Open Settings > System > System update and install any available Android updates. Then launch Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, select Manage apps & device, and update all pending app updates. Restart your phone after completing all updates.
  4. Free up storage space. Go to Settings > Storage to check available space — you need at least 10-15% free storage for optimal performance. Delete large files, move photos and videos to cloud storage, and clear Downloads folder. Use Files app or Google Files to identify and remove duplicate files and large unused downloads.
  5. Disable animations and reduce visual effects. Access Developer Options by going to Settings > About phone and tapping Build number seven times. Return to Settings > System > Developer options and set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale all to 0.5x or turn them off completely.
  6. Restart and optimize background processes. Restart your phone to clear memory and stop unnecessary background processes. After restart, go to Settings > Battery > Background app refresh and disable it for apps you don't need running constantly. Check Settings > Apps > Special access > Device admin apps and disable any unnecessary administrator permissions.
  7. Check for malware and reset if necessary. Run Google Play Protect scan in Play Store settings to check for malicious apps. If performance issues persist, consider a factory reset by going to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data. Back up important data first, as this will restore your phone to original factory condition.
