How to Fix Android Overheating

Stop your Android phone from overheating with these proven fixes. Close resource-heavy apps, adjust settings, and prevent thermal damage to your device.

  1. Remove the case and move to a cool location. Take off your phone case immediately to improve heat dissipation. Move away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or hot surfaces like car dashboards. Place your phone on a cool, hard surface like a wooden table or metal desk.
  2. Close all running applications. Tap the Recent Apps button (square icon or swipe up and hold depending on your Android version). Swipe up on each app card to close it, or tap 'Clear All' if available. This immediately reduces CPU load and heat generation.
  3. Enable Airplane Mode temporarily. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open Quick Settings. Tap the Airplane Mode toggle to disable all wireless radios. This stops the phone from working hard to maintain cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections while it cools down.
  4. Reduce screen brightness and turn off the display. Lower your screen brightness to minimum using the brightness slider in Quick Settings. Press the power button to turn off the screen completely and let your phone rest for 10-15 minutes. The display is often the largest power consumer.
  5. Check for rogue apps in battery usage. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. Look for apps consuming unusually high percentages of battery power. Tap on problematic apps and select 'Force Stop' or uninstall them if they're not essential.
  6. Disable unnecessary features and reduce performance. Turn off GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi hotspot in Settings if not needed. Go to Settings > Developer Options and change 'Background Process Limit' to 'At most 2 processes'. If Developer Options isn't visible, tap Build Number in About Phone seven times first.
  7. Restart your device after cooling. Once your phone feels cool to the touch (typically 10-20 minutes), hold the power button and tap 'Restart'. This clears temporary files and resets system processes that may have been causing excessive heat generation.
