How to Resolve Android Fingerprint and Face Unlock Failures

Restore biometric security on your Android device. Follow these steps to troubleshoot and fix fingerprint and face unlock recognition errors.

  1. Clean the biometric sensors. Power off the device and use a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth to wipe the fingerprint sensor area and the front-facing camera lens. Oils, moisture, or screen protector residue frequently cause recognition failure. Do not use cleaning solvents or compressed air.
  2. Clear the biometric system cache. Open Settings and navigate to Apps > See all apps. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right, select Show system, and locate Biometrics or Com.android.biometrics. Select Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache and Clear storage.
  3. Verify current system software. Outdated security patches often disrupt biometric drivers. Navigate to Settings > System > Software update and tap Check for update. Install any available updates and restart the device immediately upon completion.
  4. Re-enroll biometric profiles. Navigate to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock. Select Fingerprint unlock or Face unlock and delete all existing profiles. Once cleared, follow the on-screen prompts to register your fingerprint or face under optimal lighting conditions.
  5. Test in Safe Mode. Third-party applications may interfere with biometric authentication processes. Hold the Power button, then long-press the Power Off icon on the screen to enter Safe Mode. If biometrics function correctly here, uninstall recently added third-party security or accessibility apps.
