How to Force Restart a Frozen Android Phone
Learn how to force restart a frozen Android device when the screen becomes unresponsive. Follow these steps to regain control of your phone.
- Perform a forced hardware restart. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button simultaneously. Continue holding both buttons for 15 to 30 seconds until the screen turns black and the device logo appears. Release the buttons once the manufacturer logo is visible on the display.
- Provide external power. Connect your device to a verified power source using a high-quality USB-C cable and wall adapter. Allow the device to charge for at least 15 minutes without attempting to turn it on. This clears potential low-battery state errors that may cause system hangs.
- Verify physical inputs. Ensure that the power and volume buttons are not physically obstructed by a protective case or debris. Press each button individually to confirm they maintain tactile feedback. Remove any third-party cases to rule out mechanical interference.
- Identify the frozen state. Check if the device is currently performing an intensive background task, such as a major firmware update or a factory reset. If the screen displays text related to an update, do not force a restart, as this may corrupt the system partition. Wait at least one hour before taking further action.
- Access Recovery Mode. If the device boots into a black screen, hold the Power and Volume Down buttons during startup to trigger Recovery Mode. Navigate the menu using the volume keys to highlight Restart System Now and confirm your selection by pressing the Power button. This performs a clean reboot of the core Android operating system.
