How to Customize Android Status Bar Icons

Learn how to customize and manage status bar icons on Android devices using System UI Tuner or native display settings.

  1. Enable Developer Options. Open Settings and navigate to About phone. Locate the Build number entry and tap it seven times in rapid succession until the system displays the message that you are now a developer.
  2. Access System UI Tuner. While stock Android restricts system-level status bar modification, many manufacturers include a System UI Tuner. If not natively visible in Settings, download a third-party System UI Tuner shortcut app from the Play Store to trigger the hidden activity.
  3. Toggle Status Bar Icons. Once inside the System UI Tuner menu, select Status bar. You will see a list of individual toggles for system icons including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Battery, and Alarm. Tap the toggle next to any icon to immediately hide or show it from the status bar.
  4. Manage Battery Percentage. If you prefer to see the numeric value of your battery level, navigate to Settings > Battery. Toggle the Battery percentage switch to Always show. This changes the status bar icon to include the exact charge percentage.
  5. Use Third-Party System UI Tools. For granular control beyond toggling, utilize tools like SystemUI Tuner by Zachary Wander via ADB commands. Connect your device to a computer, authorize USB debugging, and grant the application secure settings permissions via the terminal command 'adb shell pm grant com.zacharee1.systemuituner android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS'.
