How to Reset Your Browser to Default Settings
Browser performance issues, unwanted extensions, or corrupted settings often require a complete reset to factory defaults. This process removes all customizations, extensions, and cached data while preserving your bookmarks and passwords in most cases.
- Back up your bookmarks and passwords. Export your bookmarks before resetting. In Chrome, click the three dots menu > Bookmarks > Bookmark manager > Export bookmarks. For Firefox, click the menu button > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML. Safari automatically syncs bookmarks with iCloud if enabled.
- Access browser settings. Open your browser's settings menu. In Chrome, type chrome://settings/ in the address bar. For Firefox, type about:preferences. Safari users go to Safari > Preferences. Edge users type edge://settings/.
- Navigate to reset options. In Chrome, scroll to Advanced > Reset and clean up. Firefox users click General, then scroll to Firefox Updates section. Safari reset options are under Privacy tab > Manage Website Data. Edge users go to Reset settings in the left sidebar.
- Initiate the reset process. Click the reset option for your browser. Chrome offers 'Clean up computer' and 'Restore settings to original defaults'. Firefox requires clicking 'Refresh Firefox'. Safari users click 'Remove All Website Data'. Edge provides 'Restore settings to default values'.
- Confirm the reset action. Read the warning dialog carefully as it lists what will be removed. Click 'Reset settings' in Chrome, 'Refresh Firefox' in Firefox, 'Remove Now' in Safari, or 'Reset' in Edge. The browser will close and reopen automatically during this process.
- Complete the setup wizard. Your browser will reopen with a fresh installation state. Sign in to your browser account to restore synced data like bookmarks and passwords. Accept or decline data collection preferences and set your preferred search engine.
- Restore bookmarks if needed. If bookmarks did not restore automatically, import the HTML file you exported earlier. Go to your browser's bookmark manager and select Import bookmarks. Choose the HTML file from your Downloads folder to restore all saved bookmarks.
