How to Fix PS5 Update Errors

PS5 update errors can prevent your console from installing critical system software or game updates. These errors typically stem from network connectivity issues, insufficient storage space, or corrupted download files.

  1. Check your internet connection. Navigate to Settings > System > Console Information > Network to view connection status. Run a connection test by selecting Test Internet Connection. Ensure download speeds are at least 5 Mbps for stable updates.
  2. Free up storage space. Go to Settings > Storage and check available space on your console storage. Delete unnecessary games, captures, or applications if you have less than 10 GB free. System updates require additional temporary space beyond the update file size.
  3. Restart your PS5 completely. Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the console shuts down completely. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to restart. This clears temporary files and resets network connections that may be causing update conflicts.
  4. Clear the update cache. Start your PS5 in Safe Mode by holding the power button for 7 seconds until you hear two beeps. Select option 5: Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. This removes corrupted update files that may be blocking new downloads.
  5. Download updates manually. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Turn off automatic updates, then manually check for updates. This forces a fresh download attempt and bypasses automatic retry limitations.
  6. Reset network settings. Navigate to Settings > System > Console Information > Network > Settings > Reset Network Settings. Re-enter your Wi-Fi credentials or reconnect ethernet cable. This resolves DNS conflicts and connection authentication issues.
  7. Update via USB if wireless fails. Download the PS5 system update file from PlayStation's official website to a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create a folder structure PS5/UPDATE/ and place the file inside. Insert USB into your PS5 and select Settings > System > System Software > Update via USB Storage Device.
