How to Fix Apps That Won't Update in Google Play Store

Apps failing to update in Google Play Store can stem from storage issues, cache problems, or network conflicts. These steps resolve the most common update failures and restore normal app functionality.

  1. Check available storage space. Open Settings > Storage and verify you have at least 1GB of free space. Apps need temporary space during updates even if the final size is smaller. Delete unused files or apps if storage is low.
  2. Clear Google Play Store cache and data. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage. Tap Clear Cache first, then Clear Data. This removes temporary files that may be blocking updates. You'll need to accept Play Store terms again after clearing data.
  3. Restart Google Play Services. Navigate to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > Storage > Manage Space > Clear All Data. Confirm the action, then restart your device. This resets the core service that handles app updates and downloads.
  4. Check network connection and switch networks. Test your internet connection by opening a webpage. If using WiFi, switch to mobile data or try a different WiFi network. Some networks block or throttle app store traffic, preventing updates from completing.
  5. Manually update individual apps. Open Google Play Store and tap your profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available. Tap Update next to specific apps instead of Update all. This isolates problematic apps and often bypasses bulk update failures.
  6. Remove and re-add your Google account. Go to Settings > Accounts > Google and select your account. Tap Remove account, then restart your device. Add the account back through Settings > Accounts > Add account > Google. This refreshes your Play Store authentication.
  7. Update Google Play Store itself. Visit play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.vending on your device's browser. If an update is available, tap Update to install the latest Play Store version. An outdated Play Store can't properly update other apps.
