How to Reset a Forgotten Microsoft Password
A forgotten Microsoft password blocks access to Outlook, OneDrive, Xbox, and other Microsoft services. The password reset process uses your recovery information to verify your identity and create a new password.
- Navigate to the Microsoft password reset page. Open your web browser and go to account.live.com/password/reset. This is Microsoft's official password recovery portal. Select 'I forgot my password' and click Next.
- Enter your Microsoft account email or phone number. Type the email address or phone number associated with your Microsoft account in the text field. Click Next to proceed to the verification step.
- Choose your verification method. Select how you want to receive your security code from the available options. Microsoft shows partial contact information for security. Choose either 'Text my mobile phone' or 'Email me' based on what's available.
- Enter the verification code. Check your chosen contact method for a security code from Microsoft. Enter this code in the verification field and click Next. The code expires after 10 minutes.
- Create your new password. Enter a new password that meets Microsoft's requirements: at least 8 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Type it again in the confirmation field to verify accuracy.
- Complete the password reset. Click Next to finalize your password change. Microsoft will confirm the reset and automatically sign you out of all devices for security. You'll need to sign in again with your new password.
