How to Use Adobe Premiere Pro for Beginners

Learn Adobe Premiere Pro basics with this step-by-step guide. Master importing, editing, effects, and exporting your first video project.

  1. Create a new project. Launch Premiere Pro and click 'New Project' on the startup screen. Name your project and choose a location to save it. Leave the other settings at their defaults unless you have specific requirements. Click 'OK' to create the project.
  2. Set up your sequence. Go to File > New > Sequence. Choose a preset that matches your footage resolution and frame rate. For most modern footage, select 'Digital SLR > 1080p > DSLR 1080p30' or '1080p24' depending on your camera settings. Click 'OK' to create the sequence.
  3. Import your media files. Double-click in the Project panel or press Ctrl+I (Windows) or Cmd+I (Mac) to import files. Select your video clips, audio files, and images. Premiere Pro supports most common formats including MP4, MOV, and AVI. Your imported files appear in the Project panel.
  4. Add clips to your timeline. Drag video clips from the Project panel to the Timeline panel. Drop them on Video track 1 (V1). Audio automatically goes to Audio tracks 1 and 2 (A1, A2). Clips snap together automatically. Use the Selection Tool (V key) to move clips and the Razor Tool (C key) to cut them.
  5. Make basic edits. Trim clips by hovering over clip edges until you see the trim cursor, then drag to shorten or lengthen. Use spacebar to play and pause your timeline. Press the left and right arrow keys to move frame by frame. Delete unwanted sections by selecting them with the Selection Tool and pressing Delete.
  6. Add transitions and effects. Open the Effects panel and expand Video Transitions > Dissolve. Drag 'Cross Dissolve' between two clips for a smooth transition. For color correction, go to Effects > Video Effects > Color Correction and drag 'Lumetri Color' onto a clip. Adjust settings in the Effect Controls panel.
  7. Add titles and text. Go to Graphics > New Layer > Text to create titles. Type your text in the Program Monitor and adjust font, size, and color in the Essential Graphics panel. Position text by dragging it in the Program Monitor or using the Position controls in Essential Graphics.
  8. Export your finished video. Press Ctrl+M (Windows) or Cmd+M (Mac) to open the Export Settings. Choose 'H.264' format for web videos or 'QuickTime' for high quality. Select a preset like 'YouTube 1080p Full HD' or customize settings manually. Click 'Export' to render your video to the chosen location.
