How to Import Bookmarks to a New Browser

Switching browsers doesn't mean losing your carefully curated bookmarks. All major browsers include import tools that transfer your bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from your previous browser in minutes.

  1. Open the import tool in your new browser. In Chrome, go to Settings > You and Google > Import bookmarks and settings. In Firefox, click the menu button and select Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import Data from Another Browser. In Safari, go to File > Import From. In Edge, navigate to Settings > Profiles > Import browser data.
  2. Select your source browser. Choose the browser you're importing from in the dropdown menu. The tool will automatically detect installed browsers on your system. If your source browser isn't listed, select "Bookmarks HTML file" to import from a previously exported file.
  3. Choose what data to import. Check the boxes for the data you want to transfer. Select "Bookmarks" at minimum, but you can also import browsing history, passwords, autofill data, and extensions. Uncheck items you don't want to transfer to keep your new browser clean.
  4. Start the import process. Click "Import" or "Import Data" to begin the transfer. The process typically takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on how much data you're importing. Don't close the browser during this process.
  5. Verify your bookmarks imported correctly. Open your bookmarks manager to confirm everything transferred properly. In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+O (Cmd+Option+B on Mac). In Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+B (Cmd+Shift+B on Mac). Check that bookmark folders maintained their organization and all links work correctly.
  6. Clean up duplicate or unwanted bookmarks. Remove any duplicate bookmarks that may have been created during import. Delete outdated links and reorganize folders to match your browsing habits. Most browsers highlight recently imported items to make cleanup easier.
