How to Connect a Soundbar to Your TV

Connecting a soundbar to your TV improves audio quality dramatically over built-in speakers. Most modern TVs support multiple connection methods, with HDMI ARC offering the best audio quality and easiest control.

  1. Identify your TV's audio output ports. Check the back and sides of your TV for HDMI ports labeled 'ARC' or 'eARC', an optical audio port (small square with a hinged cover), or a 3.5mm headphone jack. HDMI ARC ports are usually HDMI port 1 or 2 and clearly labeled.
  2. Choose your connection method. Use HDMI ARC if both devices support it for best quality and TV remote control. Choose optical for reliable digital audio without remote control. Use Bluetooth for wireless connection with slight audio delay. Avoid 3.5mm analog connections unless no other options exist.
  3. Connect the cable between devices. For HDMI ARC, connect an HDMI cable from the TV's ARC port to the soundbar's HDMI ARC/OUT port. For optical, connect an optical cable from the TV's optical out to the soundbar's optical in. Ensure cables click securely into place.
  4. Enable HDMI ARC in TV settings. Navigate to your TV's audio settings menu and enable HDMI ARC or CEC control. On Samsung TVs, go to Settings > Sound > Expert Settings > HDMI-eARC Mode. On LG TVs, find Settings > Sound > HDMI ARC. Enable the feature and set audio output to external speakers.
  5. Configure the soundbar input. Power on your soundbar and select the correct input using the remote or buttons. Press the HDMI, Optical, or Bluetooth button depending on your connection method. The soundbar display should show the active input mode.
  6. Set up TV audio output. In your TV's sound settings, change audio output from TV speakers to external speakers or soundbar. Disable TV speakers to prevent echo. Set audio format to PCM for compatibility or Bitstream for surround sound if your soundbar supports it.
  7. Test audio and adjust settings. Play content with dialogue and music to test the connection. Adjust soundbar volume using your TV remote with HDMI ARC or the soundbar remote with other connections. Check that audio plays from the soundbar, not the TV.
