How to Prepare Recovery Codes Before Travel
Secure your digital access before traveling. Learn how to generate, store, and verify your account recovery codes to prevent account lockouts abroad.
- Identify critical accounts requiring codes. Log into your primary email, cloud storage, and password management accounts to check for Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) settings. Focus on accounts that rely on SMS-based codes, as these are unreliable during international travel. Create a list of every service that supports recovery codes.
- Generate codes within security settings. Navigate to the Security or Privacy settings menu for each identified account. Locate the 2FA or Login Verification section and select Generate Recovery Codes. Once the codes appear, ensure they are visible on your screen before proceeding.
- Transfer codes to an encrypted offline location. Copy the codes into an encrypted note or an offline vault. Do not store these in unencrypted text files or photo libraries. If you use a password manager, add these codes to the Notes field of the corresponding account entry.
- Create a physical hard-copy redundancy. Write your most critical recovery codes in a small, discreet notebook kept separately from your device. Alternatively, print the codes and store them inside your passport cover or a travel wallet. This ensures access if your primary devices are lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Verify sync and offline availability. Toggle your device to Airplane Mode to simulate an offline state. Open your password manager or encrypted file to ensure the stored codes remain accessible without an active internet connection. If the app requires an online handshake, download the data locally to your device storage.
