How to Organize and Label Your Chargers and Cables
Stop cable clutter. Follow this professional system to label, organize, and identify every charger and cable in your workspace.
- Categorize your hardware by power output. Group all chargers and cables by their connector type and wattage. Separate high-output USB-C power adapters from low-voltage legacy cables to prevent confusion during future use.
- Apply adhesive labels to power adapters. Print a label identifying the target device, such as 'MacBook Pro' or 'Monitor'. Apply the label to the flat side of the power brick, ensuring it does not cover ventilation holes.
- Tag cables at both ends. Wrap a thin piece of label tape around the base of the cable connector at both ends. Use abbreviated text like 'MBP' or 'iPhone' to ensure the cable remains identifiable even when unplugged.
- Use heat shrink for permanent identification. For high-use cables, slide a piece of clear heat shrink tubing over the label you have applied to the cable. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting to shrink the tubing, permanently sealing the label against abrasion.
- Organize using dedicated cable slots. Place your labeled chargers into a segmented storage box or a drawer organizer. Keep the labeled cable ends facing upward or outward to allow for instant identification before retrieval.
