How to Plan Power for a Wall Mounted TV

Learn the professional requirements for planning hidden power, cable management, and outlet placement for a seamless wall-mounted television installation.

  1. Calculate the exact mounting height. Determine the optimal viewing center, typically 42 inches from the floor to the center of the screen. Mark this height on the wall. Subtract the distance from the TV mounting holes to the center of the screen to identify the precise mounting plate location.
  2. Identify the recessed power location. Measure the location of your TV's power input port on the rear chassis. Choose an outlet position that falls within the recessed area of the mount to ensure the TV sits flush against the wall. Ensure this position avoids existing wall studs.
  3. Check for internal wall obstructions. Use a non-contact voltage tester around your intended cut-out area to ensure no electrical wires are present behind the drywall. Verify the depth of the wall cavity to accommodate the recessed outlet housing.
  4. Install the recessed power kit. Trace the template provided with your recessed power kit onto the wall at your calculated position. Use a drywall saw to cut the hole, then route your power extension cable and AV cables through the cavity to the base of the wall.
  5. Secure the power and signal cables. Connect the male end of the extension power cord to your source outlet near the floor. Route the female end through the wall to the recessed outlet box. Secure the box to the drywall and snap the trim plate into place.
  6. Test the electrical connection. Plug the television into the newly installed recessed outlet. Switch on the circuit breaker and use the non-contact voltage tester to verify power is flowing correctly. Power on the display to confirm connection stability before finalizing the mount.
