How to Use an iPad as a Laptop Replacement
Transform your iPad into a primary workstation. Follow these steps to optimize hardware, software, and workflow for a complete laptop replacement experience.
- Configure external input devices. Connect your keyboard and mouse via Bluetooth or Smart Connector. Navigate to Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard to customize key repeat rates and modifier keys. Under Settings > General > Trackpad & Mouse, adjust the pointer speed and enable Natural Scrolling to match your desktop habits.
- Enable Stage Manager for window management. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner. Tap the Stage Manager icon to enable multitasking. This allows you to resize windows and stack applications, creating a spatial desktop environment similar to macOS.
- Configure external display support. Connect your iPad to an external monitor using a USB-C or Thunderbolt cable. Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Arrange to mirror or extend your workspace. Extending the display allows full-screen support for apps on both the iPad and the secondary monitor.
- Master keyboard navigation. Utilize system-wide keyboard shortcuts to navigate faster. Hold the Command key (⌘) on your home screen or within any app to display a floating cheat sheet of supported shortcuts. Use Command + Space to trigger Spotlight search for instant app launching and file retrieval.
- Standardize file management. Open the Files app to organize your local and cloud storage. Connect external drives by plugging them into the USB-C port; they will appear in the Files sidebar under Locations. Right-click files or folders to create new folders, duplicate items, or get info.
- Disable unnecessary multitasking features. If you experience performance lag, disable background app refresh or reduce transparency. Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Motion and toggle on Reduce Motion. This limits animations and accelerates system responsiveness during heavy multitasking sessions.
