How to Properly Reset and Prepare a Hand-Me-Down Tablet

Clean a used tablet for a new user. Follow these steps to factory reset, remove accounts, and ensure optimal performance for the next owner.

  1. Perform a comprehensive data backup. Before erasing any data, ensure all critical files, photos, and documents are synced to a cloud service or external drive. On iPads, navigate to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. On Android, go to Settings > System > Backup and verify all toggles are set to On.
  2. Sign out of all cloud accounts. Manually sign out of Apple ID or Google accounts to disable activation locks. On iPad, go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out. On Android, navigate to Settings > Passwords & accounts, select the account, and tap Remove account.
  3. Execute a factory data reset. Wipe all partitions to clear user data and system cache. For iPad, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings. For Android, select Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).
  4. Sanitize the physical hardware. Use a lint-free microfiber cloth slightly dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol or specialized electronics cleaning solution. Gently wipe the display, chassis, and charging port. Do not spray liquid directly onto the screen.
  5. Validate the clean state. Power on the tablet to ensure it boots to the 'Hello' or 'Welcome' setup screen. If the device prompts for a previous user's login credentials, the reset was incomplete. Power off the device and keep it in its original packaging if available.
