How to Set Up OneDrive on a New Computer

OneDrive provides seamless file synchronization across all your devices through Microsoft's cloud storage service. Setting it up correctly ensures your files stay accessible and up-to-date everywhere you work.

  1. Download and install OneDrive. Visit onedrive.com and click Download. On Windows 10/11, OneDrive comes pre-installed but may need updates through Microsoft Store. On Mac, download the installer and drag OneDrive to your Applications folder. Launch the application after installation completes.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account. Click the OneDrive icon in your system tray or menu bar. Enter your Microsoft account email and password when prompted. If you have a work or school account, choose the appropriate account type. OneDrive will verify your credentials and begin the initial setup process.
  3. Choose your OneDrive folder location. OneDrive will suggest a default location for your sync folder, typically C:\Users\[Username]\OneDrive on Windows or ~/OneDrive on Mac. Accept the default or click Change to select a different location. Avoid placing the folder on external drives or network locations as this can cause sync issues.
  4. Configure Files On-Demand settings. When prompted about Files On-Demand, choose to enable this feature. This keeps placeholder files on your computer while storing actual file contents in the cloud, saving local storage space. You can access any file instantly, and frequently used files download automatically.
  5. Select folders to sync. OneDrive will show all available folders from your cloud storage. Uncheck any folders you don't need on this computer to save local storage space. Important folders like Desktop, Documents, and Pictures sync by default. You can change these selections later through OneDrive settings.
  6. Set up automatic camera upload. If prompted, enable automatic photo and video uploads from your phone when connected to this computer. Choose whether to upload from all devices or just the current one. OneDrive will create a Camera Roll folder to store these uploads automatically.
  7. Complete initial sync and verify setup. OneDrive will begin downloading your selected files and folders. Monitor the progress through the OneDrive icon in your system tray or menu bar. Once sync completes, verify your files appear in the OneDrive folder and that the green checkmarks indicate successful synchronization.
