How to Set Up iDrive Backup on Windows and Mac
iDrive provides cloud backup for your files across multiple devices with 5GB free storage and unlimited file versioning. Setting up iDrive backup takes about 10 minutes and ensures your important data stays protected with automatic scheduled backups.
- Create an iDrive account. Visit idrive.com and click Sign Up for Free Account. Enter your email address and create a password with at least 8 characters. Verify your email address through the confirmation link sent to your inbox.
- Download and install the iDrive client. Log into your iDrive account and click Download for Windows or Download for Mac. Run the downloaded installer file and follow the installation wizard. Accept the license agreement and choose the default installation location unless you need it elsewhere.
- Sign in to the iDrive desktop application. Launch the iDrive application from your desktop or Applications folder. Enter your iDrive email address and password. Click Sign In and wait for the application to authenticate and load your account settings.
- Choose your backup folders. Click the Backup tab in the iDrive application. Select files and folders by checking the boxes next to Documents, Pictures, Desktop, and other important locations. Avoid backing up system files, applications, or temporary files that waste storage space.
- Configure backup settings. Click Settings in the backup interface. Set your backup schedule to Daily, Weekly, or Real-time depending on how frequently your files change. Choose your backup speed as High Speed for faster uploads or Low Speed to avoid slowing your internet connection.
- Set up encryption. In the Settings menu, choose your encryption option. Select Default Encryption for standard protection or Private Key Encryption for maximum security. If you choose private key encryption, create a strong encryption key and store it safely since iDrive cannot recover it.
- Start your initial backup. Return to the Backup tab and click Start Backup to begin uploading your selected files. Monitor the progress bar and estimated time remaining. Keep your computer connected to the internet until the initial backup completes.
- Verify backup completion. Once the backup finishes, click the Restore tab to view your backed-up files in the cloud. Navigate through your folder structure to confirm all important files uploaded successfully. Check the backup log for any errors or skipped files.
