How to Set Up Google Drive for Desktop

Google Drive for desktop replaces the old Google Drive File Stream and Backup and Sync apps. It creates a dedicated drive on your computer that syncs with your Google Drive cloud storage, allowing offline access to files and seamless collaboration.

  1. Download Google Drive for desktop. Visit drive.google.com/drive/download and click Download for desktop. The installer will automatically detect your operating system. Save the installer file to your Downloads folder.
  2. Install the application. Run the downloaded installer file. On Windows, right-click and select Run as administrator. On Mac, drag the Google Drive icon to your Applications folder. Follow the installation prompts and restart your computer when prompted.
  3. Sign in to your Google account. Launch Google Drive for desktop from your Applications folder or Start menu. Click Sign in and enter your Google account credentials. If you have multiple Google accounts, select the primary account you want to use for file synchronization.
  4. Choose your sync preferences. Select Mirror files to sync everything to your local drive, or Stream files to save local storage space and access files on-demand. Mirror files creates local copies of everything. Stream files downloads files only when you open them.
  5. Set folder location. Choose where Google Drive appears on your computer. The default location is usually fine for most users. On Windows, this is typically G:\ drive. On Mac, it appears in the sidebar under Locations. Click Start to begin the initial sync.
  6. Configure backup settings. Click the Google Drive icon in your system tray or menu bar, then select Preferences. In the My Computer tab, choose which folders to back up to Google Drive, such as Desktop, Documents, and Pictures. Enable or disable backup for each folder as needed.
  7. Verify synchronization. Open the Google Drive folder on your computer and confirm your files appear correctly. Create a test file in the Google Drive folder and check that it appears at drive.google.com within a few minutes. The sync status appears next to each file as green checkmarks.
