How to Set Up Backblaze Cloud Backup

Backblaze Personal Backup provides unlimited cloud storage for one computer at $60 per year. The setup process takes under 10 minutes and begins backing up your files immediately after installation.

  1. Create your Backblaze account. Navigate to backblaze.com and click Sign Up. Enter your email address and create a password with at least 8 characters. Choose Personal Backup from the service options. Complete the 15-day free trial signup without entering payment information.
  2. Download the Backblaze installer. Log into your Backblaze account and click Download Backblaze. The installer detects your operating system automatically. Save the installer file to your Downloads folder and run it as an administrator on Windows or with sudo privileges on macOS.
  3. Install and sign in to the Backblaze client. Run the installer and accept the license agreement. The client installs to your system tray on Windows or menu bar on macOS. When the installation completes, enter your Backblaze email and password in the sign-in window that appears automatically.
  4. Configure backup exclusions. Click Settings in the Backblaze control panel. Review the default exclusions which skip temporary files, system files, and common cache directories. Add custom exclusions for large media libraries or work files you store elsewhere. Click Save Settings when finished.
  5. Set bandwidth and schedule preferences. Navigate to Settings > Performance. Set upload throttle to Automatic for balanced performance or choose Custom to limit bandwidth during work hours. Configure backup schedule to Continuous for real-time protection or set specific backup windows if you have data caps.
  6. Start the initial backup. Click Back Up Now in the main control panel to begin your first backup. The initial backup scans your entire drive and uploads all eligible files. Monitor progress in the control panel—the first backup typically takes 24-72 hours depending on data volume and connection speed.
  7. Verify backup completion and setup mobile access. Check the Backblaze control panel after 24 hours to confirm active backup status. Download the Backblaze mobile app and sign in with your account credentials to access files remotely. Test file restoration by downloading a small file through the web interface at secure.backblaze.com.
