How to Restore Files from a Time Machine Backup

Learn the exact process to restore individual files or entire folders from a Time Machine backup on macOS. Secure your data with our step-by-step guide.

  1. Connect your backup drive. Plug your Time Machine external drive into your Mac using the appropriate cable or hub. Ensure the drive is powered on and recognized by the system.
  2. Open the target folder. Open the Finder window and navigate to the location where the file was originally stored before it was deleted or modified. If you are uncertain of the location, you can perform the restore process from a blank Finder window.
  3. Enter the Time Machine interface. Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen. Select 'Browse Time Machine Backups' from the dropdown menu to enter the restoration interface.
  4. Find your file version. Use the timeline on the right edge of the screen or the arrow buttons to navigate through historical snapshots of your drive. Locate the specific file or folder you wish to recover by browsing through the folders as you would in a standard Finder window.
  5. Execute the restoration. Select the file or folder you want to recover. Click the 'Restore' button located at the bottom of the screen to move the item back to its original location on your Mac.
