How to Implement the 3-2-1 Backup Strategy

Protect your data with the industry-standard 3-2-1 backup strategy. Learn how to secure your files across local and cloud environments.

  1. Define your data set. Identify every folder containing critical files, system configurations, and irreplaceable media. Consolidate these assets into a single parent directory to ensure no files are excluded from the automated backup process.
  2. Create your primary local backup. Connect a high-speed external SSD to your workstation. Use Time Machine on macOS or File History on Windows to set this drive as the destination for your primary, daily incrementals.
  3. Establish an off-site local backup. Configure a second physical drive, such as a NAS unit or a secondary rugged HDD, to act as your off-site repository. If using a NAS, enable remote access or store the physical drive at a secondary location, such as a secure office or trusted residence.
  4. Configure cloud synchronization. Select a dedicated cloud backup provider that supports block-level incremental uploads. Install their client and configure it to encrypt all data locally before transmission to ensure privacy in the cloud environment.
  5. Validate your restore path. Test your backup effectiveness by attempting a file recovery from each of the three sources. Confirm that the data is not only backed up but also accessible and readable on your system.
