How to Prevent USB-C Hub Performance Issues

Eliminate connectivity drops, power failure, and data corruption with your USB-C hub. Follow these steps to ensure reliable peripheral performance.

  1. Calculate total power requirements. Check the power draw of every peripheral connected to your hub. Subtract the hub's internal power consumption, usually 10W to 15W, from the total wattage of your power adapter to determine the available power for connected drives and displays.
  2. Prioritize direct connections for high-bandwidth devices. Plug high-performance storage drives or external GPUs directly into your computer's remaining USB-C or Thunderbolt ports. Reserve the hub for lower-bandwidth devices like keyboards, mice, or SD cards to prevent data bus saturation.
  3. Update firmware for the hub controller. Visit the manufacturer's support portal to download the latest firmware updater for your specific model. Run the installer while the hub is connected to resolve known compatibility issues with newer OS kernels.
  4. Disable sleep settings for external drives. Navigate to System Settings > Energy Saver on macOS or Power & Sleep on Windows to ensure hard drives are not put to sleep when the display turns off. This prevents mounting errors and disk ejection warnings upon wake.
  5. Inspect cable shielding and length. Replace any cables exceeding 0.8 meters that lack proper electromagnetic interference shielding. Use only cables marked with the USB-IF certification logo to ensure stable data transfer speeds and reliable power delivery.
  6. Eject drives properly before disconnecting. Always eject or unmount all volumes within the Disk Utility or File Explorer before unplugging the hub. This prevents file system corruption caused by interrupting write operations during power cutoff.
