How to Identify Matter-Compatible Smart Home Devices
Learn how to spot Matter-certified smart home hardware. Identify the official logo, scan QR codes, and check packaging for universal compatibility.
- Locate the Matter certification logo. Inspect the physical packaging of the device. Look for the official Matter logo, which consists of a stylized three-pointed arrow icon accompanied by the word 'Matter'. If this mark is absent from the box, the device does not natively support the Matter standard.
- Check for the Matter onboarding QR code. Examine the device itself or the provided quick-start guide for a numeric setup code or a QR code. Matter-enabled devices feature a unique setup label, often located on the base of the device or behind a battery cover, designed for universal scanning by any Matter-compliant controller.
- Search the official Connectivity Standards Alliance product database. Visit the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) product search portal in your web browser. Type the specific model number or brand name of the device into the search bar. This database serves as the definitive source for identifying certified Matter hardware.
- Identify ecosystem compatibility flags. Look for labels indicating support for Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings simultaneously. A device that explicitly lists compatibility with all four major platforms is a definitive indicator of Matter integration.
- Verify bridge requirements. Determine if the device connects directly to your network or requires a proprietary bridge. If the device is branded as 'Matter-over-Thread' or 'Matter-over-Wi-Fi', it functions natively as a Matter device. Legacy devices using a bridge must list the bridge itself as the Matter-certified component.
