How to Add a Device to Google Home
Adding devices to Google Home lets you control smart lights, speakers, thermostats, and other compatible devices with voice commands or through the app. Most devices connect in under five minutes using the Google Home app.
- Open the Google Home app. Launch the Google Home app on your Android or iOS device. Make sure you're signed in to the same Google account you want to use for device control. Your phone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the device you're adding.
- Tap the plus icon to add a device. In the Google Home app, tap the plus (+) icon in the upper left corner. Select 'Set up device' from the menu, then choose 'New device' to add a device to your home network.
- Select your home and scan for devices. Choose which home you want to add the device to if you have multiple homes configured. The app will automatically scan for nearby devices that are in pairing mode. Make sure your smart device is powered on and ready for setup.
- Choose your device from the list. Select your device from the list of found devices. If your device doesn't appear, tap 'Can't find your device?' and choose your device manufacturer from the list to follow specific setup instructions.
- Follow the device-specific setup process. Complete the setup steps shown on screen, which vary by device type. This typically includes connecting the device to your Wi-Fi network, confirming its location in your home, and testing basic functionality.
- Assign the device to a room. Choose which room the device is located in or create a new room. This organization helps with voice commands and grouping devices together for control. Give the device a clear, memorable name if the default name isn't suitable.
- Test device control. Try controlling your device through the Google Home app to confirm it's working properly. Test voice commands with your Google Assistant by saying 'Hey Google' followed by a command for your new device.
