How to Add a Device to Apple Home
Adding devices to Apple Home creates a unified smart home ecosystem controlled through your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. HomeKit-compatible devices integrate seamlessly for voice control, automation, and remote access.
- Verify HomeKit compatibility. Check your device packaging or manual for the HomeKit logo or "Works with Apple Home" certification. Look for an 8-digit HomeKit setup code, usually found on a sticker on the device or in the manual.
- Open the Home app. Launch the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. If you don't see the app, download it from the App Store. The app comes pre-installed on iOS 10 and later.
- Tap the plus icon. In the top-right corner of the Home app, tap the plus (+) icon. Select "Add Accessory" from the menu that appears.
- Scan the HomeKit code. Point your device's camera at the 8-digit HomeKit code on your accessory or its packaging. The code appears as a QR code or printed numbers. If scanning fails, tap "Enter Code Manually" and type the 8 digits.
- Follow device-specific setup. Complete any additional setup steps that appear on screen. This may include connecting the device to Wi-Fi, updating firmware, or configuring device-specific settings. Wait for the green checkmark confirmation.
- Name and assign the device. Give your accessory a descriptive name like "Living Room Lamp" or "Front Door Lock." Assign it to a room by selecting from existing rooms or creating a new one. Choose the accessory type if prompted.
- Test the connection. Tap the device tile in the Home app to verify it responds correctly. Try voice commands with Siri like "Hey Siri, turn on Living Room Lamp." Check that the device appears in Control Center under Home Controls.
