How to Add a Device to Alexa
Adding devices to Alexa expands your smart home capabilities and enables voice control of lights, plugs, thermostats, and other compatible devices. The Amazon Alexa app serves as the central hub for discovering and configuring new devices.
- Open the Amazon Alexa app. Launch the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet. Sign in with your Amazon account if prompted. The app icon displays a blue speech bubble with white sound waves.
- Navigate to the Devices tab. Tap the Devices icon at the bottom of the screen. This opens your smart home device management area where all connected devices appear organized by room and type.
- Select the device category. Tap the plus icon (+) in the top-right corner, then select Add Device. Choose your device category from the list: Lights, Plugs, Switches, Thermostats, or browse All Devices for other options.
- Choose your device brand and model. Select your device manufacturer from the alphabetical list. Find your specific device model and tap it. The app will display setup instructions specific to your device type and brand.
- Put your device in pairing mode. Follow the on-screen instructions to prepare your device for connection. Most devices require holding a pairing button for 3-10 seconds until an LED indicator flashes or changes color. Some devices automatically enter pairing mode when first powered on.
- Complete the discovery process. Tap Discover Devices in the Alexa app. The app will scan for available devices and display them in a list. Select your device when it appears, then tap Continue to proceed with setup.
- Assign the device to a room. Choose which room contains your device from the dropdown menu, or create a new room by tapping Create Room. Enter a custom device name if desired, or keep the default name. Tap Save to complete the setup.
- Test the device connection. Return to the Devices tab and verify your new device appears in the correct room. Tap the device tile to test manual control, or say 'Alexa, turn on [device name]' to test voice control functionality.
