How to Transfer Smart Home Devices When Moving

Follow these steps to factory reset and safely transfer your smart home devices to a new owner or move them to a new property.

  1. Remove devices from your controller app. Open the manufacturer app for your smart home ecosystem. Navigate to the device settings menu for each individual product and select the option to Remove or Delete device. This severs the cloud-based handshake between your account and the hardware.
  2. Perform a physical factory reset. Locate the physical reset button or pinhole on your device. Press and hold the button for 10 to 15 seconds until the status LED flashes or the device plays a chime. This ensures all local network credentials and user data are wiped from the device's internal memory.
  3. Disconnect third-party integrations. Access your primary smart home hub app, such as Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. Navigate to Linked Services or Connected Accounts and remove the associated manufacturer account. This prevents the old devices from phantom-triggering routines in your new home.
  4. Download usage data if required. If your devices track energy consumption or security logs, export this data through the account settings dashboard. Once the account is decommissioned or moved, this historical data is typically purged from the provider's servers.
  5. Update your address settings. Go to the profile section of your smart home apps and update your default home address. This is critical for location-based automation triggers like geofencing. Ensure all associated automation rules are updated to reflect the new location coordinates.
