How to Set Up Smart Locks

Smart locks replace traditional deadbolts with keypad entry, smartphone control, and remote access capabilities. This guide covers installation and initial configuration for most major smart lock brands.

  1. Remove your existing deadbolt. Unscrew the interior thumb turn assembly first, then remove the exterior deadbolt cylinder. Keep the existing strike plate if it's in good condition. Measure the door thickness and backset distance (typically 2⅜ inches) to ensure your new smart lock will fit.
  2. Install the smart lock mechanism. Insert the new deadbolt through the edge hole, ensuring the beveled edge faces the door frame. Secure with the provided screws. Thread the cable through the door hole and attach the exterior assembly, aligning the mounting posts with the interior holes.
  3. Connect the interior assembly. Attach the cable to the interior motor unit and mount the assembly to the door. Ensure the turn piece aligns properly with the deadbolt mechanism. Insert batteries according to the polarity markings, typically four AA batteries in the battery compartment.
  4. Download and pair the companion app. Install the manufacturer's app on your smartphone and create an account. Enable Bluetooth and follow the in-app pairing process, which typically involves pressing and holding the program button on the lock while scanning for devices. Enter the default programming code when prompted.
  5. Configure your master code. Set a new master programming code to replace the factory default. Choose a 4-8 digit code that doesn't include obvious patterns or repeated numbers. This code controls all lock settings and cannot be deleted, so store it securely.
  6. Add user access codes. Create individual access codes for family members and regular visitors. Most smart locks support 20-100 user codes. Set different access schedules if needed, such as temporary codes for house sitters or recurring codes for cleaning services.
  7. Test all lock functions. Verify the deadbolt extends and retracts smoothly from both manual and app control. Test each user code from the exterior keypad. Check that the door closes and locks properly without binding. Confirm the auto-lock feature activates after the set delay period.
