How to Set Up Smart Lights

Set up smart lights in your home. Choose a hub, install bulbs, connect to WiFi, and control via app or voice.

  1. Check hub requirements for your smart light system. Some smart light systems like Philips Hue require a dedicated hub or bridge to function. Others like LIFX and Wyze connect directly to your WiFi. Review the product manual or manufacturer website to determine if your lights need a hub. If a hub is required, ensure you have one before proceeding.
  2. Install the smart light bulbs in your fixtures. Turn off the power to the light fixtures at the wall switch or circuit breaker. Screw or insert the smart bulbs into your existing light sockets, following the wattage and type specifications for each fixture. Turn the power back on. Most smart bulbs will flash or indicate power status when first activated.
  3. Set up the hub or bridge if required. If your system uses a hub, plug it into power and connect it to your router using an Ethernet cable or WiFi. Wait for the hub's LED to stabilize, usually 30 to 60 seconds. Download the manufacturer's app on your smartphone. Open the app and follow the on-screen pairing instructions to connect the hub to your account.
  4. Add smart lights to the app. Open the manufacturer's app and navigate to the Add Light, Add Device, or Discovery section. Initiate a search to scan for nearby smart lights. The app will detect bulbs on the same network. Select each light you want to add and assign it a room name and custom label, like Living Room or Bedside Lamp. Complete the pairing process for each bulb.
  5. Test brightness and color controls. In the app, select each light and adjust the brightness slider to confirm the bulb responds. If your lights support color, tap the color selector and test a few hues. Verify that changes appear on the bulb within one to two seconds. Check that turning lights off in the app extinguishes the bulb.
  6. Enable voice control if desired. Open the app settings and look for voice assistant integration, usually under Integrations or Connected Services. Select Alexa, Google Home, or Siri depending on your device. Grant permission and authenticate with your voice assistant account. The smart lights will then appear as controllable devices in your voice assistant app.
  7. Organize lights into rooms and create scenes. In the app, group lights by room or area using the Room or Zone feature. Create scenes—preset brightness and color combinations—for common activities like Evening, Movie, or Focus. Save these scenes for quick access. Test a scene by selecting it to confirm all grouped lights respond as expected.
