How to Set Up Google Home for the First Time
Setting up your Google Home device connects you to Google Assistant and transforms your space into a voice-controlled smart home hub. This process takes about 10 minutes and requires the Google Home app on your smartphone.
- Download and open the Google Home app. Install the Google Home app from the App Store or Google Play Store on your smartphone. Open the app and sign in with your Google account. Ensure your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi network you want your Google Home to use.
- Plug in your Google Home device. Connect your Google Home to power using the included adapter. The device will automatically boot up and begin speaking setup instructions. Wait for the four colored lights to appear on top of the device, indicating it's ready for setup.
- Add your device in the Home app. Tap the plus icon in the Google Home app and select 'Set up device.' Choose 'New device' and select your home from the list. The app will automatically detect your Google Home device nearby.
- Connect to your Wi-Fi network. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter your password when prompted. Your Google Home will connect to the network and download any available updates automatically. This process takes 2-3 minutes.
- Choose your device location and name. Select which room your Google Home is located in from the preset options or create a custom room name. This helps Google Assistant understand context when you give location-based commands like 'turn off the living room lights.'
- Train Voice Match for personalized responses. Follow the prompts to teach Google Assistant your voice by saying 'Hey Google' and 'OK Google' twice each. This enables personalized responses for your calendar, commute, and other personal information. Other household members can add their voices later.
- Configure privacy and music preferences. Choose your privacy settings for voice recordings and decide whether to enable personal results. Select your default music service from options like YouTube Music, Spotify, or Apple Music. These settings can be changed later in the Home app.
