How to Set Up Amazon Alexa for the First Time

Setting up Amazon Alexa transforms any Echo device into a voice-controlled smart home hub. The process requires the Alexa app and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

  1. Download the Amazon Alexa app. Install the Amazon Alexa app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Open the app and sign in with your Amazon account credentials. If you don't have an Amazon account, tap 'Create a new Amazon account' and follow the prompts.
  2. Plug in your Echo device. Connect your Echo device to power using the included adapter. The light ring will turn blue, then orange when the device enters setup mode. Wait for Alexa to say 'Hello, your device is ready for setup.'
  3. Add your device in the Alexa app. Tap the 'Devices' icon at the bottom of the Alexa app. Tap the '+' icon in the top right corner, then select 'Add Device.' Choose 'Echo & Alexa' from the device list, then select your specific Echo model.
  4. Connect to your Echo's Wi-Fi network. The app will prompt you to connect to your Echo's temporary Wi-Fi network. Go to your phone's Wi-Fi settings and select the network starting with 'Amazon-' followed by letters and numbers. Return to the Alexa app when connected.
  5. Select your home Wi-Fi network. Choose your home Wi-Fi network from the list in the Alexa app. Enter your Wi-Fi password when prompted. Your Echo will disconnect from the temporary network and connect to your home network. The light ring will turn blue, then off when successfully connected.
  6. Choose your device location. Select which room your Echo is located in or create a new room name. This helps organize multiple devices and enables room-specific commands. Tap 'Continue' to proceed to the next step.
  7. Test your setup. Say 'Alexa, what time is it?' to test voice recognition. The light ring should turn blue when Alexa hears you, and she should respond with the current time. If she doesn't respond, check that your device isn't muted (red light ring indicates mute).
