Set Up Your Smart Home Hub
Install and configure a smart home hub to control devices across your home network. Complete setup in under 30 minutes.
- Unbox the hub and verify contents. Remove the hub from the box along with its power adapter. Check that all components are present: the hub device itself, power cable, and any included documentation. Inspect the device for visible damage or defects. Keep the original packaging in case you need to return the device.
- Choose a central location and plug in the hub. Place the hub in a central location in your home, ideally on a shelf or table in a main room like your living room or kitchen. Position it away from metal objects, microwave ovens, and thick walls that can block WiFi signals. Plug the power adapter into a nearby outlet. Wait 30 seconds for the device to boot—you'll see LED lights activate or hear a startup sound.
- Download the hub's companion app on your smartphone. Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) on your smartphone. Search for your hub manufacturer's app—for example, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Home (for Apple HomePod). Tap Get or Install. Once downloaded, open the app and sign in with your account credentials for that ecosystem. If you don't have an account, create one using your email address.
- Connect the hub to your WiFi network. In the companion app, tap Set Up New Device or Add Device (exact wording varies). Select your hub model from the list. The app will prompt you to connect to the hub's temporary WiFi network—this appears as a name like AmazonXXXX or GoogleHome_Setup. Switch your phone's WiFi settings to connect to this temporary network. Return to the app and select your home WiFi network from the list. Enter your WiFi password and confirm the connection.
- Set your location, language, and time zone. After WiFi connection completes, the app will ask for your location. Enter your address or allow location access. Select your language preference and confirm your time zone. These settings enable the hub to provide accurate weather information, handle location-based automations, and display correct time on the device.
- Enable voice control and set up optional features. The app will prompt you to enable voice control by speaking a wake word like Alexa, Google, or Siri. Follow the on-screen prompts and repeat the wake word clearly 3–4 times. You can then choose to enable optional features such as voice purchase confirmation, Bluetooth speaker mode, or camera features if your hub includes them. Disable any features you don't want immediately—you can enable them later.
- Test the hub with a simple command. Say the wake word followed by a basic command like Tell me the time or What's the weather. The hub should respond immediately. If the hub doesn't respond, check that it's powered on (look for indicator lights), verify WiFi is connected in the app, and move closer to the hub. Restart the device by unplugging it for 10 seconds, then plugging it back in.
- Create rooms and name the hub in the app. In the companion app, navigate to Settings and select Home. Create rooms that match your home's layout—Living Room, Kitchen, Bedroom, etc. Rename your hub to something descriptive like Living Room Hub or Main Hub. Assigning rooms and names makes it easier to organize devices and give voice commands specific to areas of your home.
