How to Set Up a Smart Home from Scratch

A smart home transforms everyday devices into an interconnected system you control from your phone or voice commands. This guide walks you through selecting the right ecosystem and connecting your first devices to create a foundation you can expand over time.

  1. Choose your smart home ecosystem. Select between Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings as your primary platform. This decision determines which devices will work together seamlessly. Apple HomeKit offers the tightest security but fewer device options, while Amazon Alexa supports the widest range of third-party devices.
  2. Install your smart home hub. Download the corresponding app: Home for Apple HomeKit, Google Home for Google Assistant, or Alexa for Amazon Echo devices. Create an account and complete the initial setup. For Samsung SmartThings, purchase the SmartThings Hub and connect it to your router via ethernet cable.
  3. Secure your Wi-Fi network. Change your router's default password and enable WPA3 encryption in your router settings. Create a separate guest network specifically for smart home devices to isolate them from your main devices. Name this network something like 'SmartHome_Guest' for easy identification.
  4. Start with smart lighting. Purchase smart bulbs or smart switches compatible with your chosen ecosystem. Install smart bulbs by screwing them into existing fixtures and powering them on. Open your smart home app, tap 'Add Device,' and follow the pairing instructions which typically involve turning the bulb on and off three times.
  5. Add a smart thermostat. Turn off power at your circuit breaker before installation. Remove your old thermostat and photograph the wire connections. Connect the new smart thermostat according to the included wiring diagram, matching wire colors to labeled terminals. Restore power and connect the device to your app using the QR code or manual pairing mode.
  6. Install smart security devices. Mount smart door locks by removing your existing deadbolt and following the manufacturer's installation guide. Place smart cameras in corners with clear sight lines and access to power outlets. Install door/window sensors on the frame opposite the magnet on the door itself. Add each device to your app by scanning QR codes or entering setup codes.
  7. Create rooms and organize devices. Open your smart home app and create rooms like 'Living Room,' 'Bedroom,' and 'Kitchen.' Assign each device to its physical location by selecting the device and choosing the appropriate room. Rename devices with descriptive names like 'Bedside Lamp' instead of generic model numbers.
  8. Set up basic automations. Create your first automation by opening the automation section of your app and selecting 'Create New.' Set a simple rule like 'Turn on front porch light at sunset' or 'Lock front door at 11 PM.' Test each automation by manually triggering the conditions or waiting for the scheduled time.
