How to Set Up a Smart Doorbell with a Chime

Smart doorbells with chimes provide doorbell notifications throughout your home while enabling remote video monitoring. This setup connects your smart doorbell to both your existing wiring and a compatible chime unit for comprehensive coverage.

1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker. Locate your doorbell circuit breaker in your electrical panel and switch it to the OFF position. Use a voltage tester to confirm power is off at your existing doorbell wires. Most doorbell circuits are 16-24 volts and labeled as such.
2. Remove the existing doorbell and assess wiring. Unscrew your old doorbell from the wall and disconnect the wires. Check that you have at least two wires (typically labeled front and trans or positive and negative). Ensure wires are long enough to reach your new smart doorbell terminals.
3. Install the chime unit indoors. Mount the smart chime unit near a power outlet in a central location like a hallway or living room. Plug it into the wall outlet and download the manufacturer's app on your smartphone. Follow the in-app instructions to connect the chime to your Wi-Fi network.
4. Mount the smart doorbell. Connect the doorbell wires to your smart doorbell terminals according to the manufacturer's diagram. Secure the doorbell to your door frame or wall using the provided mounting bracket and screws. Ensure the doorbell is level and the camera has an unobstructed view.
5. Configure doorbell settings in the app. Open the manufacturer's app and add your doorbell device using the QR code or manual entry method. Connect the doorbell to your Wi-Fi network and test the video feed. Configure motion detection zones, notification preferences, and chime volume settings.
6. Pair the doorbell with the chime. In the app, navigate to Device Settings and select Add Chime or Chime Setup. Follow the pairing process, which typically involves pressing a button on the chime unit when prompted. Test the connection by pressing the doorbell button.
7. Restore power and perform final testing. Turn the circuit breaker back on and verify your doorbell receives power. Test all functions including doorbell press, motion detection, live video feed, two-way audio, and chime notifications. Adjust motion sensitivity and notification timing as needed.
