How to Set Up a Robot Vacuum
Robot vacuums require initial setup to map your home and connect to your Wi-Fi network. This process typically takes 30 minutes and ensures optimal cleaning performance from day one.
- Charge the robot vacuum. Place the robot vacuum on its charging dock and let it charge for at least 3 hours before first use. The charging indicator light will turn solid green when fully charged. Some models require a full charge cycle to calibrate the battery management system.
- Download and install the manufacturer app. Download the official app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Common apps include iRobot Home, Roborock, or Shark Clean depending on your model. Create an account or sign in with existing credentials.
- Connect the robot to Wi-Fi. Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the robot until it beeps or the Wi-Fi light starts flashing. Open the app and select Add Robot or Setup New Device. Follow the in-app prompts to connect the robot to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Prepare your home for mapping. Clear the floor of cables, small objects, and lightweight rugs that could interfere with navigation. Close doors to rooms you want to exclude from cleaning. Ensure adequate lighting in all areas you want mapped.
- Run the initial mapping cycle. Place the robot in the center of your main living area and press the Clean button or start mapping through the app. Let the robot complete a full cleaning cycle without interruption. This typically takes 45-90 minutes depending on your home size.
- Review and edit the floor plan. Once mapping is complete, open the app to view the generated floor plan. Add room labels, merge or split rooms as needed, and set up no-go zones around pet areas or delicate furniture. Save your customized map.
- Schedule regular cleaning sessions. Set up automatic cleaning schedules through the app. Choose specific days, times, and rooms for each cleaning session. Configure different cleaning modes for different areas if your model supports it.
