How to Set Up a Nest Thermostat

Setting up a Nest thermostat replaces your old thermostat with smart temperature control and scheduling features. Most installations take under 30 minutes and require basic wire connections.

1. Turn off power to your HVAC system. Locate your circuit breaker and switch off the breaker labeled for your heating and cooling system. Test that power is off by attempting to turn on your old thermostat — the display should be blank.
2. Remove your old thermostat. Unscrew the thermostat from the wall and carefully disconnect the wires. Note which wire connects to each terminal by taking another photo or labeling each wire with tape.
3. Install the Nest base. Hold the Nest base against the wall and mark screw holes with a pencil. Drill pilot holes if mounting into drywall, then secure the base with the included screws.
4. Connect the wires to the Nest base. Insert each wire into the corresponding terminal on the Nest base, following the labels from your old thermostat. Push wires firmly until they click into place. Most common connections are R (power), W (heat), Y (cool), G (fan), and C (common).
5. Attach the Nest display. Align the display with the base and press until it clicks securely into place. The display should sit flush against the base with no gaps.
6. Restore power and complete initial setup. Turn the circuit breaker back on. The Nest display will power on and guide you through language selection, Wi-Fi connection, and system testing. Follow the on-screen prompts to configure your heating and cooling settings.
7. Configure the Google Home app. Open the Google Home app on your phone and tap the + icon to add a device. Select Works with Google, then Nest, and sign in with your Google account. Follow the prompts to link your thermostat and set up schedules.
