How to Set Up an HP Printer

Setting up an HP printer involves connecting the hardware, installing drivers, and configuring print settings. Most HP printers support both wired and wireless connections, with HP Smart app providing the simplest setup experience.

  1. Unpack and power on the printer. Remove all protective tape and plastic from the printer, including inside the ink cartridge area. Connect the power cord and press the power button. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization process, which takes 30-60 seconds.
  2. Install ink cartridges. Open the front cover or cartridge access door. Remove the new cartridges from their packaging and pull off all protective tape. Insert each cartridge into its color-coded slot until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door.
  3. Load paper into the input tray. Pull out the input tray completely and adjust the paper guides to their widest position. Load plain paper with the print side facing down. Slide the paper guides snug against the paper edges without bending the paper.
  4. Download HP Smart app. Install HP Smart from your device's app store or download it from hp.com/smart. Open the app and tap the plus icon to add a new printer. The app will automatically detect nearby HP printers and guide you through the setup process.
  5. Connect to Wi-Fi network. From the HP Smart app, select your printer and choose 'Set Up Wi-Fi'. Enter your Wi-Fi network password when prompted. The printer will connect to your network and display a confirmation message on its screen or through the app.
  6. Install printer drivers. The HP Smart app will automatically download and install the correct drivers for your printer model. On Windows, you can also go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners and click 'Add a printer or scanner'. Your HP printer should appear in the list.
  7. Print a test page. From the HP Smart app, tap your printer and select 'Print Test Page'. Alternatively, open any document on your computer and select Print, then choose your HP printer from the list. Check that text is sharp and colors are accurate.
