How to Set Up a Brother Printer

Setting up a Brother printer involves connecting it to your network, installing drivers, and configuring basic settings. This process works for most Brother inkjet and laser printer models released in the last five years.

  1. Unpack and power on the printer. Remove all packaging materials including tape, plastic covers, and protective foam. Connect the power cord to the printer and plug it into a wall outlet. Press the power button and wait for the initialization process to complete, which takes about 2 minutes.
  2. Install ink cartridges or toner. Open the front cover or top lid depending on your model. Remove the new cartridges from their packaging and remove all protective tape and clips. Insert each cartridge until it clicks into place, following the color-coded slots. Close the cover and wait for the printer to recognize the cartridges.
  3. Load paper into the tray. Pull out the paper tray completely and adjust the paper guides to the widest position. Insert a stack of plain paper with the print side facing down. Slide the guides snugly against the paper edges without bending the sheets. Push the tray back into the printer.
  4. Connect to your Wi-Fi network. On the printer's LCD panel, navigate to Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard. Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter your password using the on-screen keyboard. Wait for the connection confirmation message and note the IP address displayed.
  5. Download and install printer drivers. Go to Brother's support website and search for your exact printer model. Download the Full Driver & Software Package for your operating system. Run the installer and select 'Wireless Network Connection' when prompted for connection type.
  6. Add the printer to your computer. On Windows, go to Settings > Printers & scanners > Add printer. On Mac, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > + button. Your Brother printer should appear in the available devices list. Select it and click Add.
  7. Print a test page. Open any document or photo on your computer and select File > Print. Choose your Brother printer from the dropdown menu and click Print. The test page should print within 30 seconds, confirming successful setup.
