How to Test Camera and Microphone Before a Meeting

Ensure your audio and video are ready for your next call. Follow this guide to verify your hardware settings on macOS and Windows.

1. Check hardware connection status. Ensure your webcam and microphone are securely plugged into your computer's USB ports. For wireless peripherals, verify that the Bluetooth pairing is active in System Settings on macOS or Settings on Windows. A solid connection is the prerequisite for all subsequent testing steps.
2. Perform a local audio input test. On macOS, navigate to System Settings > Sound > Input and speak at a normal volume. Observe the Input level meter to ensure the bars react to your voice. On Windows, go to Settings > System > Sound > Input and click on your microphone to view the Test your microphone feature, then select Start test to verify signal strength.
3. Validate camera feed integrity. Open the native Camera application on your OS to confirm the sensor is receiving light. Ensure the feed is clear, in focus, and not obstructed by a physical privacy slider or electronic lens cover. This confirms that the camera driver is initialized and functional.
4. Set default devices in application settings. Open your preferred conferencing software and access its specific Audio and Video settings menus. Manually select your hardware from the dropdown lists rather than relying on the System Default option. This forces the application to route traffic exclusively through your tested peripherals.
5. Adjust ambient environment lighting. Position yourself so that your primary light source is in front of you, not behind. Direct backlighting creates silhouettes that obscure your face on camera. Verify the final image quality within the software preview window before joining the meeting.
