How to Store Printer Ink and Toner Cartridges Properly

Extend the lifespan of your printer supplies with these essential storage protocols for ink cartridges and toner powders.

  1. Maintain original sealed packaging. Keep cartridges in their factory-sealed foil bags until immediate use. The foil acts as a vapor barrier, preventing ink evaporation and toner moisture absorption.
  2. Control temperature and humidity. Store supplies in a room with a stable temperature between 60°F and 75°F (15°C to 24°C). Avoid basements, attics, or garages where thermal fluctuations can cause internal ink leakage or toner clumping.
  3. Position cartridges correctly. Store ink cartridges in an upright position, specifically with the print head facing up. This prevents ink from pooling in the nozzles, which causes drying and blockages.
  4. Shield from direct light. Keep all cartridges away from windows, fluorescent lights, and direct UV rays. Light exposure degrades the internal chemical composition of the ink and the sensitive photosensitive drum on toner cartridges.
  5. Manage opened cartridges. If a cartridge is removed but not empty, seal it in an airtight plastic bag with a damp sponge or paper towel. Store it in a cool, dark location for no longer than two weeks to prevent nozzle clogging.
