How to Transfer Everything to a New Android Phone
Moving to a new Android phone means transferring your apps, contacts, photos, messages, and settings from your old device. Android's built-in transfer tools handle most data automatically, while manual methods ensure nothing gets left behind.
- Back up your old Android phone. Open Settings > Google > Backup on your old phone. Tap Back up now to sync your apps, contacts, SMS messages, and device settings to your Google account. Wait for the backup to complete before proceeding.
- Prepare your new Android phone. Power on your new phone and follow the setup prompts. When asked to copy apps and data, select Copy from another device or Restore from backup. Choose Android phone as your source device type.
- Connect both phones using the transfer cable. Use the USB-A to USB-C adapter included with most new Android phones to connect your old device directly to the new one. If no cable is provided, select Wireless transfer instead and ensure both phones are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Select data to transfer. Choose which data categories to copy: Apps, Contacts, Messages, Photos, Videos, Music, and Device settings. Uncheck any categories you don't want to transfer. The process will show estimated transfer time based on your selections.
- Complete the automatic transfer. Tap Start transfer and keep both phones connected and awake during the process. The transfer can take 30 minutes to several hours depending on data amount. Your new phone will restart automatically when finished.
- Manually transfer remaining files. For files not covered by automatic backup, connect your old phone to a computer and copy Documents, Downloads, and custom folders to your computer. Then connect your new phone and copy these files to the appropriate directories.
- Verify and complete setup. Check that your contacts, photos, and important apps are present on your new phone. Sign into apps that require separate authentication like banking or social media apps. Test calling, texting, and internet connectivity to ensure everything works correctly.
