How to Trade In Your Old Phone
Trading in your old phone reduces the cost of upgrading while ensuring proper device recycling. Most carriers, manufacturers, and retailers offer trade-in programs that provide instant credit toward new purchases.
- Check your phone's trade-in value. Visit carrier websites (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile), manufacturer sites (Apple, Samsung), and third-party services (Gazelle, Swappa) to compare trade-in values. Enter your phone model, storage capacity, and condition. Values vary significantly between programs, so check at least three options.
- Prepare your phone for evaluation. Clean your phone thoroughly and test all functions including buttons, touchscreen, cameras, speakers, and charging port. Document any cosmetic damage with photos. Remove cases and screen protectors to allow accurate condition assessment.
- Back up your data. Create a full backup using iCloud (iPhone) or Google Backup (Android). Transfer photos, contacts, and app data to your new device or cloud storage. Verify the backup completed successfully before proceeding.
- Sign out of all accounts. Sign out of Apple ID or Google Account through Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out (iPhone) or Settings > Accounts > Remove Account (Android). Disable Find My iPhone or Find My Device. Sign out of any banking, social media, or streaming apps manually.
- Factory reset your phone. Navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings (iPhone) or Settings > System > Reset > Erase all data (Android). Confirm the reset and wait for the process to complete. The phone will restart to the initial setup screen.
- Complete the trade-in process. Submit your trade-in application online or visit a retail store. Provide accurate condition details and phone specifications. For online trades, print the prepaid shipping label and package your phone securely. For in-store trades, bring your phone and valid ID.
- Track your trade-in credit. Monitor your trade-in status through the program's website or app. Online trade-ins typically take 5-10 business days for evaluation and credit processing. In-store trades provide immediate credit. Contact customer service if your credit doesn't appear within the expected timeframe.
